Expansion plan of the City of Luxembourg

Conrad Rosbach (1817 - 1885)

The Treaty of London, signed in May 1867, provided for the demolition of the Fortress. The government rapidly set up a committee to draw up a town planning project for the decommissioned military grounds. Published a year later, this lithography is the first plan to expand the city on the north-west side. Four avenues originate from the old city and run to the outside. They are inter-linked by circular streets and boulevards. The old forts made room for an intermediate area which was left unbuilt to become a “public promenade.” The extension plan, which provided for many trees to be planted, denoted a concern to embellish the city.
