The construction of the new theatre, also known as Grand Théâtre, was initially planned to celebrate the millenial of the City of Luxembourg in 1963. But the official inauguration was held only on 15 April 1964. The building was erected to the plans of the Parisian architect Alain Bourbonnais selected in 1958 following an international architecture competition.
