Loyal to his sovereigns Charles V and Philip II, Mansfeld (1517-1604) played a key political and military role during the Netherlands war. In reward of his loyal services, Charles V awarded Mansfeld the Golden Fleece, the illustrious order of chivalry founded under the Dukes of Burgundy.
