The 1950s has gone down as a decade of athletic exploits. Luxembourg athletes from many disciplines won victories on the international stage, such as Josy Barthel in the 1500 metres or national hero Charly Gaul in cycling. And yet, sport lovers in Luxembourg tend to be more spectators than participants. Indoor sports halls did not exist yet, and most sporting events were held outdoors.
