At the request of Philippe II, the geographer Jacob van Deventer conducted a topographical survey of the main cities in the Netherlands, including Luxembourg, between 1559 and 1564. The views of the City of Luxembourg disseminated as of the end of the 16th century are based on this plan, at times embellished with aesthetic elements as is the case here. The Rue Philippe II and Rue du Curé are not shown on this plan because they were laid out by decision of the Provincial Council in 1610. The city is protected by the 14th century medieval surrounding wall, and the Marie bastion, built ca. 1545.
