In 1123, the title of Count ‘of Luxembourg’ was mentioned for the first time in the charter through which count William founded Münster Abbey. This serves as the starting point for a journey into the first half of the 12th century, a pivotal period in Luxembourg’s history, for the County of Luxembourg did not come into being until this period.
Visitors are introduced to the key medieval figures who interact with the count: his family, the noble lords of the surrounding castles, the abbot of the new monastery, the Archbishop of Trier, the Bishop of Verdun, the imperial princes and, finally, the Emperor and the Pope.
A selection of exhibits from European institutions and museums illustrates the unexpected connections that the first Luxembourg dynasty was able to forge, not only regionally but also as far afield as Saxony and Aquitaine.
