The majestic tree in the inner courtyard of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum had to be removed in March 2022 due to a fungal infection.

Experts estimated its age at almost 300 years. How could the memory of the purple beech tree, doomed to be felled, be preserved? The idea then arose to give the wood from the trunk to artists to make sculptures. Eight sculptors finally took up the challenge: Katarzina Kot-Bach, Wouter van der Vlugt, Laurent Turping, Nadine Zangarini, Jean-Paul Thiefels, Gérard Claude, Jhemp Bastin, Pitt Brandenburger and Dany Prum. The works were acquired by the two museums and are now part of the City of Luxembourg's art collection. Through the sculptures, the exhibition reviews the centuries-old history of this exceptional tree, which has stood alongside generations of inhabitants occupying the buildings of the current museum.
