For a long time, the majestic tree in the inner courtyard of what is now the Lëtzebuerg City Museum provided welcome shade for visitors frequenting the terrace to admire the view and enjoy a haven of peace in the heart of the city.

This copper beech tree, certainly very old, had an impressive trunk. It stood over 24 meters tall. Unfortunately, a virulent fungus, aggravated by particularly dry springs and summers, had so severely affected the health of the centuries-old tree that it had to be felled at the end of March 2022. The Lëtzebuerg City Museum decided to preserve parts of the trunk and asked artists to use the wood from the tree to create sculptures. Thus, the memory of the purple beech will live on through works of art. Eight sculptors ultimately took up the challenge: Jhemp Bastin, Pitt Brandenburger, Gérard Claude, Katarzyna Kot-Bach, Jean-Paul Thiefels, Laurent Turping, Wouter van der Vlugt and Nadine Zangarini. The works were acquired by the 2 Museums and are now part of the City of Luxembourg’s art collection.
